History of Mission Involvement
MBBC has a longstanding history and relationship with many mission organizations and initiatives. In Higher Ground: A Celebration of 70 Years, Lee and Catherine Allen share about the history of MBBC’s mission involvement. In fact, they note that, at one of the first evangelistic services held at the church, a preacher from Selma preached on mission involvement – to a congregation that still depended on other churches for their financial support.
From the early days on, MBBC has sought to build and maintain relationships with mission organizations in an effort to expand God’s kingdom and to see the gospel go forth – in Birmingham, Alabama, our country, and to the ends of the earth. For example, our church has been involved in Builders for Christ since 1984 and has sent a team to serve with Builders for Christ every summer since 1984. We have also sent out family mission teams since 2009 and youth/college international mission teams since 2000. Adults and individuals have also participated in mission opportunities for many years through the work of MBBC.
For almost forty years, over 20% of MBBC’s financial gifts have been allocated to missions. Our prayer is that, through our giving, the love of Christ will be made known – that many may hear and believe the good news of the gospel. The face of our church may have changed over the last seventy years, as we have moved locations, dedicated new buildings, planted sister churches, and called new ministers, but one thing that has not changed is the call to mission and making the gospel known, through praying, giving, going, and supporting mission organizations.
